Summary of this year's breeding season (September 2024)

It's time for another post in the series of summaries of this year's breeding season. Let's move to our meadows near Gródek, this time, where we noted a record nesting success of waders. It reached almost 94%!

In the research area, ornithologists found 100 nests, of which 97 were located inside our anti-predator fence. Most of them were Lapwing nests (39), as many as 28 nests belonged to Black-tailed Godwits (!) - a record for this area, slightly fewer, because 26 were Redshank nests. We managed to locate 3 Great Snipe nests and 4 belonging to Snipes. Although we couldn't find a Ruff nest, the female's behavior indicated that this species also was nesting here for the fourth year in a row. We have to add that Gródek is the only one confirmed site of a Ruff nesting in Poland.

Another phenomenon on the scale of our country is the density and number of pairs of Black-tailed Godwits nesting on one of the fenced plots. On an area of 30 ha, there were as many as 28 pairs – a significant part of the Polish population! Their nesting success this year was even more incredible, reaching 100%!

Field work was carried out by ornithologists from the Nature Society Great Snipe - Dubelt.
